Tour Rita’s new interior fitout by Mary Daish Architect over a glass of wine.

Simple, understated architecture provides a backdrop for the vibrancy of cooking and eating in this new 30-seat restaurant, situated in a tiny worker’s cottage in Aro Street, Wellington. The design focus was on making an intimate space, so that dining felt like eating at a friend’s house. A solid wall between the kitchen and seating area was removed and a “kitchen pass” bench now draws a line between the two spaces.

In keeping with the relaxed mood, diners are delighted by the secret drawer in each table which holds cutlery and condiments. Within the small footprint each table enjoys its own ambience, created with the help of a wall graphic, art works, and the use of cork and walnut which add a rich softness to the room. A bench seat gives definition, colour and texture to a long wall and provides seating and storage.

In collaboration with Sarah Maxey (wall graphic), Tom Mackie (paintings), Yvette Velvin (painting hanging) and Blacklight (folded cardboard pendants).
